Every October, baseball’s best come to the big stage and compete for the World Series trophy. It is a big deal if a team makes it and gets to play in one of the games. There are three sets of series they have to get through: the division series, the championship series and the prominent World Series. The World Series began back in 1903 when the Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since then, the New York Yankees have won 27 World Series whereas the Texas Rangers have not won any, but have made it two years in a row. Getting home-field advantage is one of the most important things in the playoffs.
“The New Yankees have won so many World Series because they have a lot of talented players and a high payroll,” junior Aaron Vincent said.
There are some people who like just watching the games and seeing teams win.
“My favorite part of the playoffs is the actual World Series games,” physics teacher Sarah Chun said. “It’s the sense of victory that people have been waiting for.”
A new feature of the playoffs implemented this season is the wild card game. Many people have questions regarding this new series.
“I think that the wild card series is bad because playing only one game won’t show the team’s real competition,”Chun said.
The Texas Rangers’ season ended early when they were eliminated in the wild card series. At this point, the playoffs are narrowed down to four deserving teams. The New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers are playing for the American League pennant and the St. Louis Cardinals are playing the San Francisco Giants for the National League. All four teams have the same chance to win the World Series because they have brought their talent at the right time.
“I think the Detroit Tigers will win because they have MLB’s best hitter Miguel Cabrera and the best pitcher Justin Verlander,” junior Kosuke Nishatani said.
There are many different aspects that make the playoffs and World Series so exciting to watch. If people get to go to the game, it makes it that much better because they are part of the noisy crowd cheering their favorite team on. It has been one of the biggest traditions in baseball history and people look forward to it every year.
“My favorite part of the playoffs is being able to watch the best teams from the season playing each other from both leagues,” Nishatani said.
