The Plano West softball team has returned for a new season. With Coach Mike Ledsome leading and the team putting everything they have into the game, this season is sure to be a successful one.
“I am excited for team dinners and other team-building traditions we do each season which are fun because they help us grow closer as a team,” senior Kearby Milliner said.
To celebrate, the team had a season kickoff dinner where they came together as a whole to discuss their upcoming games, competitions and tournaments. They plan on working hard all season in hopes to make it to the playoffs.
“I am also looking forward to District games and just enjoying my last season playing softball,” Milliner said.
On Feb. 1, the team kicked things off with a scrimmage in McKinney where the score was 16-2. On Feb. 4 and Feb.7, they had two more scrimmages at home, where the Lady Wolves won. Following the scrimmages the team was scheduled to have their first game against Keller Central and Richland. Unfortunately, it got rained out and was rescheduled for Feb.14. The Lady Wolves lost by two points.
Following the game against Keller Central and Richland, the team headed down to Smithson Valley to compete in their first tournament of the season on Feb. 16, and stayed there until Feb. 19. They were happy to announce that West won 3-0. On Feb. 21, West went up against Denton Ryan at a home game. They played well and beat Denton Ryan by six points. On March 1, the Lady Wolves traveled to Burleson, to compete in a tournament. After all the work they put in, they walked away with a victory of 3-0.
“I am excited for winning with my favorite seniors and destroying Plano,” junior Sophie Ruestmann said.
District games followed. Their first District game was on March 6 against Lewisville, where West lost, but on March 13 in their game against Marcus they were happy to win 5-4. On March 16, they played against Allen winning by six points.
The team is putting in all their effort in each game in hopes to get to playoffs.
“I’m really hoping that we make it to playoffs this year,” sophomore Brinkley Castro said. “We have some really good players this year, and if we can get all of us to work as a team, we’ll be unbeatable.”
