Lacrosse season has begun and many people are expecting the team to accomplish a great deal of wins and like many sports at West, bring home a championship. The team has started out the season strong with a record so far of 2-2. They beat Austin Westlake and New Orleans Jesuit, but they lost extremely competitive matches against The Woodlands and Flower Mound.
“Let me just say first that I predict a good game and win against Plano, the last game of the season, April 20,” junior Remington Burke said. “But really I can see this team advancing to the playoffs, making our way through the super-regionals and hopefully getting a chance to compete for a State title.”
To help raise money for the lacrosse team, a silent auction was held on March 3. The auction was at the Deerfield Clubhouse. This was the third annual silent auction that the lacrosse team had held. This auction made it possible for the people who still wanted to donate but could not attend to still fund and support the team.
“I think it is a good idea to have an auction for a fundraiser,” junior Watson Eiadkaew said. “It is creative and a good alternative to selling candy. Also auctions can be really fun to go to.”
The club sport also has given the opportunity for kids ranging from kindergarten through eighth grades in the West cluster schools to participate and play lacrosse, and prepare for the team at a high school level. The junior Wolves teams are split by grade: first and second, third and fourth, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth.
“My favorite about being on the lacrosse team is spending almost every night of the week with some of my best friends and going to battle with them,” Burke said. “It is a team sport. The group we have this year is capable of anything.”
Some of the upcoming competition includes St. Mark’s, Coppell, Westwood and Keller and the team is willing to bring the vigor in which they practice to the field to defeat their competition and advance. Home games are held at the Plano West track behind Renner Middle School in the evening.
“Regular practices are pretty intense and we work really hard so it translates into the games,” junior Ryan Schaffer said. “I think this season will go pretty well. We beat a powerhouse team in Episcopal School of Dallas last week and I think it is a stepping stone to start beating the other traditional powerhouses and eventually winning a State championship.”
The teamwork aspect of lacrosse is definitely one of the most important. Without the trust one can have for their teammates, the whole team suffers.
“I’m confident about my teammates because the only way we win games is by trusting each other,” Schaffer said. “The winning comes from trusting each other and giving 110% in practice.”
There is hope that the lacrosse team will have a good run this season. A lot of students are confident in the team and their abilities.
“I think the lacrosse team will have a pretty good chance of winning a lot of games,” Eiadkaew said. “ I know some of the players, and they’re athletic and have a good competitive spirit.”
