The Senior Class President (SCP) elections have come to a close. After campaigning against seven other candidates, current Junior Class President (JCP) Zach Starr was re-elected as SCP for the 2016 – 2017 school year. Starr will be succeeding senior Julius Hubby, who is looking forward to passing down the torch of leading the Wolfpack.
“As SCP, I’m the person any student can come to for a problem or a potential solution to a problem,” Hubby said. “I will miss the feeling of people knowing that they can just ask me anything, but I know Zach will do an amazing job. He’s a great guy who knows how to lead.”
Every leader has a set of rules to follow in order to effectively guide others. This is no exception for the SCP, who is expected to practice academic honesty and exhibit school pride amongst all the activities that they do.
“The expectations are based on the student code of conduct,” Student Congress Co-Advisor Helmuth Kroog said. “We do look to those individuals as leaders, so if they’re behaving in a way that might compromise that, such as bullying another student or any use of drugs or paraphernalia, it would result in removal from that office.”
Being both JCP and SCP is a special occurrence that has only previously happened once in the history of the school, which was in 2014 with Connor Madden. Starr is well aware of the expectations that the positions hold, and he is grateful to work with the student body for another year.
“There aren’t really words to describe how I feel, but it’s quite incredible,” Starr said. “To have earned the trust of my fellow Wolves for two years in a row is a tremendous honor.”
The SCP, in general, takes more initiative with projects and serves as a guide for the JCP. Starr plans on using his previous experience to aid his future endeavors in office.
“I am glad that I had the opportunity to make mistakes and learn from them as JCP,” Starr said. “I now understand this role is more than one of just a figurehead. The greatest lesson I learned is that nothing happens if you don’t make it happen, and that’s why this year part of my campaign was making tangible promises to the Pack, so that I could be held accountable for creating positive action in the school.”
For some students, it may remain unclear what the job of SCP entails. They serve the role of being the representative of the class in the community, along with promoting the interests of their peers to the best of their ability.
“Some of my more specific duties include reunion and prom planning, directing the Legacy Project, appearing on What Up @ West and hosting pep rallies,” Starr said. “I hope to expand on my responsibilities in the upcoming year to more effectively cater to the needs of the students.”
Starr is planning on becoming more involved with the student body in the next year, making sure he is a familiar and friendly face to everyone on campus so their voices can be heard.
“I’m most looking forward to meeting more people and leaders schoolwide,” Starr said. “I want to touch base with clubs more frequently and make myself more available to students and their concerns. I am completely making myself open to anyone who has questions or suggestions for the school, or just in general anyone who wants to talk about anything. I’m eager to hear the ideas of my fellow Wolves when it comes to school improvement.”
