West is filled with leaders all around, and the junior class president (JCP) election is a suitable way for them to show who they are. The JCP must be a student who is dedicated to the school and has many strong leadership qualities. This year the candidates have many ideas to help improve our school and use their leadership skills to shine West pride.
“Being a leader is not really only about being in front of everybody,” junior Isabella Vivas said. “It’s about helping others achieve their best and doing it collectively.”
The candidates are normally students who are really involved in school activities.
“I truly love representing all the students in our school,” junior Zach Starr said. “I feel like I can represent many different sides [of the students] from athletic, to academic, to extracurricular. I feel like I’m really involved.”
Being a part of many leadership positions allows the students to have experiences in leading a group of people, and really helps in having the student understand how to be a leader.
“I was spirit captain and a National Honor Society officer,” Vivas said. “I am a natural leader, and I really unify people together.”
Former students who have been on Student Council before have been inspired to continue with spreading their leadership through the school.
“Being on the Student Council was a huge privilege,” Starr said. “I would love to be on it again to help improve our school and have the voices of our Wolves heard.”
A major attribute to our school is having pride of being the Blue Nation Capital.
“I’m enthusiastic about school and have extreme pride over West,” Vivas said. “My mission is to get all the students hyped up with school spirit.”
Campaigning is a really important part of the election and there are many ways of being creative and catching people’s attention.
“I’ve branched out to many people I have never met,” Vivas said. “I have also partnered with Mooyah. If you go from 11-2 p.m. and say Izzy for JCP or show them the tweet I tweeted out, you get a half price burger on me.”
Campaigning allows for all the JCPs to show how they choose to reach out to students through a platform that they think is best to communicate with other peers.
“I’m using a lot of social media,” Starr said. “I’m also talking to people, and making sure my friends are out there supporting me.”
Listening to the students and maintaining an interactive community is a large part of being JCP.
“Truthfully and honestly I want to hear what you guys have to say,” Starr said. “I’m completely open to meeting anybody. A thousand minds are better than one.”
The point of an election is for the students to elect someone that represents their class and who they want to voice their ideas and opinions.
“I won’t let you down; I’m here to serve you all,” Vivas said. “I will put forth so much effort, to make sure we have that sense of a Wolfpack.”
The goal of the JCP is to be a leader and create the best environment for students to be a part of.
“I want to help spread the attitude of geniality, friendship, community and open mindedness,” Starr said. “And one that suggests positive improvement.”
