West Takes on NYC
April 7, 2015
New York City. The city so nice, they named it twice. Host to television shows such as Seinfeld and Gossip Girl, movies such as Ghostbusters and King Kong, and of course, internationally known events such as New York Fashion Week. It is not common that high school students have the opportunity to go on a field trip, especially one to the Concrete Jungle.
“We went to New York during New York Fashion Week,” senior Ceara Kennedy said. “We got the opportunity to see the parts of Fashion Week that was around the Lincoln Center.”
Over Valentine’s Day weekend, students from the Advanced Fashion class, including senior Safia Ebrahim, senior Alexa Baker, and Kennedy travelled to the Big Apple to learn the history of fashion and the fashion industry. There, they went to museums and toured the city for the duration of a couple of days.
“We did a lot of tourist-y stuff,” Baker said. “We visited a bunch of fashion museums, shopped, and went to Mood Fabrics, which is a really popular fabric store in New York.”
During their three day trip, the students were given time to peruse the famous tourist destinations and sight see for themselves.
“Times Square really stood out to me, especially the restaurants and billboards in the area,” Ebrahim said. “It was all very fascinating to say the least.”
Perhaps the most remarkable thing in New York was its diversity and unique atmosphere. Home to the 8.4 million people as of 2013 and over 110 national landmarks, it is America’s most populated city.
“It’s really interesting how there are so many different people there,” said Baker. “For example, you can walk down the street and hear eight different languages in the span of ten minutes.”
For the students of Advanced Fashion, going to New York City, especially during Fashion Week, was a surreal occurrence. Not many people get to experience places such as Mood Fabrics, Chelsea Market, Times Square and much more, over a weekend field trip to The City That Never Sleeps.
“I would definitely like to go back someday,” Kennedy said. “The trip really opened my eyes to the behind-the-scenes of the fashion industry and designing clothes; it’s not just drawing things onto paper, there is actually a lot that goes into it.”
