West Playoffs
The football team went into the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Playoffs riding the momentum of one of the most remarkable seasons in the school’s history. The team’s record of 8-2 was a clear indication that the Wolves would be on the prowl come playoff time.
West met its first foe at AT&T Stadium in the first round of the playoffs. With a 5-5 record during the regular season, it did not appear as though Keller High School would pose much of a threat to West’s postseason hopes. The first quarter proved otherwise, as Keller and West went toe to toe, scoring two touchdowns each.
With the game tightly contested, it was clear that just a bit of magic from one team would make all the difference. With a huge crowd at their side, the West offense exploded for 35 points in the second quarter. In addition, the defense was a brick wall, preventing Keller from scoring a single point that quarter. West was able to hold on for a 66-41 victory and cruise into the second round of the playoffs with ease. It was time to begin preparing for the next matchup.
This came against Trinity High School, one of the best teams in the state. With only one loss during the entire season, the Trojans looked like a much tougher opponent.
The first quarter was neck and neck, with each team scoring a single touchdown. However, the Wolves were unable to stop Trinity during the second quarter. A 21-point outbreak put West in a deep hole before halftime. West came out of the locker room with renewed energy, putting an additional 14 points on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, just when it seemed as though the Wolves had clawed their way back into the game, Trinity’s offense lit up and scored another 21 points. West scored one last touchdown in the final quarter, but it was not enough to come away with the victory, as Trinity went on to win the game 49-31.
Trinity has since beaten Permian High School and played against Allen High School on Dec. 6.
Despite the loss, the Plano West football team can be proud of the phenomenal season they have had and the equally exciting postseason run.
