Respect. It’s a very important part of life itself. It is what shapes who you can be. Without respect you can’t get far in life, whether it’s respect for coworkers or peers, respect is very important. Everyone deserves to have a chance at respect.
The definition of respect is as follows: To act in a way which shows that you are aware of someone’s rights, wishes, etc. In other words, respect is treating someone like a person. Respect is not something that is just given out either, you must earn it or you will not be respected. That is just the basic principle. So what is it that you must do to get respect? You must respect others. Treat people how you’d want them to treat you and they’ll treat you as you are treating them. Though some people confuse respect for treating someone as an authority. Like, for example, some adults often say that if you don’t respect them, they won’t respect you, but that is in fact incorrect. They are saying if you don’t treat them as an authority, they won’t treat you as a person, which is not okay.
If you respect someone, odds are, they’ll return that respect, but it isn’t always true. Some instances they’ll ignore that respect and continue to treat you bad, but that is not always your fault. Sometimes, they are just bad people. “If people respect you, respect them back; If they disrespect you, respect them back. They represent their ideology. You represent yours.” So give some respect and you’ll probably get some back and if not, be the bigger person and just stay away from that person.
